Last Night…

Last night I should have been at the Biltmore. Last night I should have been in the crowd, being a part of a group of strangers sharing moment of beauty. Last night I should have been there, but I wasn’t. So I don’t even know whether or not Jellybean is a regular on Rutledge’s set list, I just know it would have been a moment.

To be quite honest, I had never heard of Justin Rutlege before I saw the poster for his show at the Biltmore, which I found when pseudo-cyber-stalking Jenn Grant. I went to her mySpace page in hopes of finding a Vancouver tour date. I was terribly excited to she she had a gig set for late November, but she was the opening act! Without hesitation I investigated the nearly 30* Canadian, to find the gentle Canadian alt-country singer-song writer easily grabbed my ear. I was dead-set that I would not miss this show. I love music, but have not been to a proper gig for an embarrassingly long time. My lifestyle has clearly changed. When the date finally came I had to admit, I wouldn’t be able to go. The show would run to late, I would be late for work the next day, causing a domino effect that was liable to destroy my productivity for the rest of the week.  So I missed it.

Why wasn’t I there? Why did I have to go to bed in time to make my day job playing with computers? I turned into a geek instead of the music scout my 16 year old self so desperately wanted to be? Going to all the shows, mingling with the music snobs and musicians, looking for messonite fallen from the sky. Don’t get me wrong. I have no regrets in the path I chose; I see great possibilities in my current future. But in a different life, in a different time, I was there.

This doesn’t stop me from enjoying the on-demand, digital servings of Jenn Grant, and Justin Rutledge. Shouldn’t stop you either! Why not listen to the below mp3s, and check out their albums.

* I’m not sure why I feel the need to call out other’s in their early 30’s, perhaps it’s ’cause I love it here!
