PolkaYves Klein Blue

Australian band Yves Klein Blue lend their fun little ditty, Polka, to a neat Mitsubishi commercial in which a young couple packs up their car from the second floor of their house:

While the song compliments the fun and upbeat nature of the commercial, its lyrics carry a far different tone:

Sid was at the gates of dawn
And Jimmy said ride the snake
So we bent our spoons and howled at the moon to find what science replaced
And it turns out it ain’t that much
Though I may have missed in in the haze
Oh it drips in your mind
And fills up your eyes
And you’ll never be the same

Florence & the Machine’s highly anticipated album is scheduled to be released in a couple of weeks. I am super excited for this one. My excitement comes mostly from the beautiful Maida Vale sessions she’s done in the past couple of years.  Florence Welch’s powerful vocals are impossible to ignore. At times she sings like a delicate angel come down from the heavens to pass on an important message, at others the power of her voice can knock you over. She’s going to be out and about on the festival circuit (mostly UK) this summer. Check  out the Florence & the Machine mySpace page for details on the dates, and please enjoy:

Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do (2009)

Major Lazer’s debut album dropped last month, it’s wittily called Guns don’t Kill People… Lazers Do. One of the alter-egos of Switch bring us a Jamaican mix-mastering commando who blends reggae, dancehall, and electro brilliance. See for yourself:

Jazz + Hervé (The Young Lovers) = GOOD

Love You MadlyThe Young Lovers (Hervé)

The Young Lovers (2009)

The much loved, multi-talented musician Hervé has added yet another alias to his roaster. Hervé released his latest offering under the name The Young Lovers, with the same album name. The style of the album is blissfully jazzy, and has me hitting the repeat button on iTunes. I strongly recommend it to anyone who likes both jazz and the beats.

One of the drawback of having many aliases is all the marketing and maintenance that naturally goes along with releasing a new project. It seems Hervé opted to neglect this part of the deal, so check out his myspace page instead.

Paolo Nutini is Sweet as Candy

I’m not sure how I completely missed Paolo Nutini’s first album, These Streets, when it came out in 2006, but I sure as heck haven’t missed his second album, Sunny Side Up! I’ve had the first single on repeat for the past couple of days. It’s so lovely! Check out the video:

I hope to have a wedding that is as fun and full of love as the one in this video!

Paolo Nutini unique vocal style must come from his mashup background of Scottish and Italian, as the young 20 something sings like no other I have heard before. Check out the Paolo Nutini website! He’s putting up a new achoustic performance of each of the songs from the new album every week. The current video is a lovely version of Growing Up Beside You.

Sailing by SilvershipsJenn Grant

Jenn Grant’s second album has been out for five months now. It is almost as beautiful as the singer herself, and is a very respectable sophmore album. Grant’s beautiful and captivating vocals combine with her personal and creative song writing. Both Echos and Orchestra For The Moon are not to be missed!

The NationalPost did a Soundcheck segment with Jenn Grant back in April. Bits of an interview with Grant and her violinist, Kinley Dowling inter-cut with the pair playing an acoustic version of Sailing by Silverships. Check out the album version of Sailing by Silverships too!

Jenn Grant is currently touring through Canada, with a date in Vancouver that I intend to attend on June 22nd at The Biltmore. Check out her myspace page for details.
