I recently watched the movie (500) Days of Summer, and I re-feel in love with that classic tune by The Smiths, Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want by The Smiths. I could resist doing a post!

Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I WantShe & Him

This recent, and beautiful rendition is from the soundtrack for the movie 500 Days of Summer by the band She & Him. The beautiful vocals are done by none other that Zooey Deschanel, the darling actress who played Summer in the movie.

Do you remember this version? From the soundtrack for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off released back in 1986. The very dreamy instrumental version pays respectful tribute to The Smiths, while being a unique creation all on its own. I love it!

I couldn’t leave out the original! First recorded in 1984 by The Smiths.

When I need to focus, and I am finding my usual music catalogue to be distracting, I pull out these amazing string quartet tribute albums by The Vitamin String Quartet. They have put out an absurd amount of cover albums in tribute to modern, and classic rock artists of the past 4 decades. In checking out their list of albums available, it’s clear that I have some digital shopping to do!

Three of my current faves from the Vitamin String Quartet catalogue:

Do You Realize (Flaming Lips cover)

Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode cover)

Clocks (Coldplay cover)

sun

This edition of Cover-licious features two covers of TV on the Radio’s Staring at the Sun, a song that has most certainly made it’s mark on modern music… It is so good, and, it iss standing the test of time. Believe it or not, the original song is now 6 years old, having come out on TVOTR’s 2004 album, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes.

Now for the covers:

Staring at the SunBonjay

Toronto based, male/female duo take on the modern classic head on, completely making it their own.

Staring at the SunThe Subways

A beautiful and subdued version that should not be missed.

Beck’s Record Club is at it again!

INXS was the first concert I attended, with my sister , when I was 12. I will always remember that evening with great fondness. INXS was a staple in my young life. Beck’s tribute to the now classic, 1986 Kick is pretty freaking awesome.

This time, Beck brings together “Liars, Annie Clark and Daniel Hart from St. Vincent, Sergio Dias from the legendary Brazilian band Os Mutantes, as well as RC veteran Brian Lebarto” to great effect.

Only the first 6 tracks from the are up thus far at Beck’s Record Club, so we will all have to patiently wait for the remainder. I couldn’t wait though to share their rendition of New Sensation, which is so beautifully redone, in such a non-INXS manner, sensitive and subdued. Absolutely gorgeous! Check it out:

Come Talk to MeBon Iver (Originally Peter Gabriel)

Early March 2010 Peter Gabriel released an album of covers, Scratch My Back, in which he did the songs of many artists he loves, which will be reciprocated by these artists doing covers of his songs. The first to reciprocate, as far as I am aware, is Bon Iver. In return for Gabriel’s beautiful version of Flume, Bon Iver did an amazing version of Come Talk to Me.

I LOVED Peter Gabriel’s album Us when it came out in 1992. Bon Iver’s grateful and respectful tribute to Mr. Gabriel is so beautiful! I cannot stop listening to it. A double single that features both Bon Iver’s version of Come Talk to Me and Peter Gabriel’s rendition of Flume was released on Record Store Day, April 17th last month.
