Well NowJesse Rose

DJ, producer, and remixer, Jesse Rose is set to release his next album, What do you do if you don’t any day now. I’ve had to opportunity to hear a couple of the new tracks, and I’ll admit, I’m excited! Well Now is the first track getting some airplay in promotion for this release. I was listening to the radio, minding my own business when I heard this funky track. It immediately caught my ear… wait a second, is that? Yes it is! The rough sounds of Howlin’ Wolf, put to beats, was making me dance in my cubicle.

Down in the BottomHowlin’ Wolf

A little research proved that the Howlin’ Wolf sample Jesse Rose masterfully uses in his new track is from the 1962 song Down in the Bottom. Originally written by Willie Dixon for Holwin’ Wolf, the track has been covered many times since, by the likes of The Rolling Stones, John Mellencamp, and Colin James. It’s a good one, and Holw’in Wolf’s version remains the best!

Do the DoHowlin’ Wolf

This brings me to another little ditty that Howlin’ Wolf recorded back in 1970, Do the Do. I cannot talk about Howlin’ Wolf and not include this song, because it’s just too darn SEXY! With super funky blues guitar, and hot lyrics like this:

Well I know
I’ve got a babe
And I know her
Love is true
But you ain’t seen nothing
‘Til you see her, see her
Do the do
Do the do

Shake her shoulder
Take her time
Mover her body
Like I move mine
When she’s dancing
You’ll love her too
When you see her
Do the do
Do the do

34 bucks
20 to waste
Everything
Right in place
Cool disposition
Love her too
When you see her
Do the do
Do the do

Well, well there
Ain’t nothing like
When you see her
Do the do
Do the do

Well I know
I’ve got a babe
And I know her
Love is true
But you ain’t seen nothing
‘Til you see her, see her
Do the do
Do the do

You really cannot miss this song… and play it for your girl, I bet she’ll like it!

At Road 2 Nowhere one of my many aims is to share awesome remixes with anyone who will listen, it’s a series I call Mix-tastic! On with the mixes!

Animal (The Crookers remix) – Miike Snow

There is little to know out there in the intertubes on this Miike Snow entity. The Miike Snow myspace page is incredibly minimalistic, featuring only a large bunny with antlers silhouette and the myspace the music player, with several fun offerings, including this track, and the original.

The Crookers, on the other hand, are quickly becoming a household name, well at least within certain demographics. They still cannot seem to secure a page on Wikipedia though. This remix is a little different from The Crookers, as it lacks that super thick base we’re accustomed to hearing from the Italian pair, but that doesn’t mean it lacks funky rhthyms! The track has a subdued base line and dancable percusions that perfectly acompany Miik Smow’s vocals. A track well worth the download!

Infinity 2008Guru Josh Project

The Guru Josh Project website describes its members as “three people who have a love for electronic music and old school 90 rave music…” who want to “…bring back the magic of the 90’s dance scene with a fresh and up to date new sound”. From listening to Infinity 2008 I believe that they are in fact bringing back the magic. Once this track finds it’s way onto your mp3 player there is so going back. The addictive tune finds it way to the front of the playlist to make you dance, late 90s style.

The remake of Guru Josh’s 1989 single,Infinity, has a fresh feel while maintaining just enough nostalgia for those of us who remember 1989. There’s no word on any future projects by these 3, though they each have independent efforts in the works.

Milkshake (Man Eat DJ & Jizm Remix) – Kelis

Milkshake (2004)

Man Eat DJ and Jizm are two young producers from the Netherlands with fresh ideas and lots of enthusiasm. Their treatment to Kelis’ well know track has awesome cut ups that are not only funky but also make the listener do a double take:

My milkshake boys brings all the… d’ d’
Damn right!

The track sets you up to hear the expected, but throws something completely different at you. I highly recommend this remix, as its guaranteed to make you want to move! I’ll be watching for what else comes of these two producers in the future, as I expect good things.

If you are wondering what Kelis is up to these days, the Harlem born beauty has put out a compilation earlier this year, The Hits, and has has a handful of tour dates in South America this month.

Below is a cover of Milkshake by the world renowned Peter Griffin:

Mix-tastic I – Legends Remixed

I love a remix! A producer takes another artist’s song, cuts it up and makes something entirely new and completely his, or her own, while still giving props to the original artist. Perhaps the new highest form of flattery? Or might blogging about the artists and remixers be the new highest form of flattery?

To celebrate the artists, remixers and the BEATS, I introduce the first post in the multi-part series: Mix-tastic!

These three classic tracks would have been remembered for many years to come without the aid of a remix. But the remixes still give the tracks just a little more weight than they had before. Each of them tantalizes the ear with sounds of the familiar while making the body move to a new beat!

I’m on Fire (Cousin Cole‘s Bad Desire Mix) – Bruce Springsteen

Born in the USA (1984)

This track has a very deep classic sound. The beauty of Springsteen’s original is amplified by Cousin Cole’s smooth editing. The lyrics to this song amaze me. Only The Boss could get away with lyrics as dirty as these while maintaining such a pure and lovable image.

Hey little girl is your daddy home
Did he go away and leave you all alone
I got a bad desire
Im on fire

Tell me now baby is he good to you
Can he do to you the things that I do
I can take you higher
Im on fire

Did he really say that? Doesn’t matter… he’s The Boss and we love ‘em!
Cousin Cole, based in NYC, is both an accomplished remixer and a co-owner of the Flagrant Fowl label. He has a has a funky remix of Timberland’s The Way I Are up at his myspace page, check it out!

Jolene (DJ Soap‘s BMAF Remix) – Dolly Parton

Jolene (1974)

Don’t let the beginning of the track fool you… it’s slightly annoying beginning, with the quickly repeating “Jo” sample is overwhelmed by a captivating layering of guitars and Dolly’s signature voice. She pleads to the stunning beauty, Jolene, to leave her man alone, with her voice full of devotion, determination and desperation. Parton wrote Jolene at the tender age of 28 in 1974, 8 years after marrying her husband Carl Dean, whom she is still happily married to today. Seems to me that Jolene, whether she be a bank teller, or a concert goer, never had a chance.

DJ Soap is a Mid-Western dynamo, working hard as a DJ, remixer and promoter. His popularity is brewing now as a result of this BAMF remix of Jolene. Check him out over at myspace.

Foxy Lady (Speaker Junk‘s Foxxy Switch Remix) – Jimi Hendrix

Are You Experienced (1967)

This banging update of Hendrix’s classic Foxey Lady by Speaker Junk is crazy sexy! Hendrix’s passionate lyrics and skillful guitar are mixed up with the thickest beats that make you want to dance all sexy like!

I wanna take you home
I wont do you no harm, no
You’ve got to be all mine, all mine

Speaker Junk keeps himself very busy, creating, and remixing under several monikers (Hervé, Voodoo Chilli, Action Man, Count of Monte Cristal, Dead Soul Brothers, The Young Lovers). He has several tracks that I adore and expect many more! Keep your eared perked for this one!
