Kid Cudi is such a cutie! And he’s like Ferris Bueller: Everyone loves him, they think he’s a righteous dude. With all of the neato collaborations Cudi has been doing, it’s tough not to notice. And now, he’s got heart throbs directing his videos! Check out the video for Kid Cudi’s Pursuit of Happiness, feat. MGMT & produced by Ratatat

I’m on the pursuit of happiness
and I know
everything that shine
ain’t always gonna be gold
I’ll be fine
once I get it,
I’ll be good.

For your listening enjoyment, here is a selection of remixes of the tune.

David Guetta’s newest offering hit the shelves today, it’s called One Love. There’s both gems and cheese on this album. My fave track from the record is about the intertubes already, but I’ll give it to you again. It’s called Memories and features Kid Cudi. And, as an extra special treat, I’ve included a fun remix from DJ Chuckie & Lil Jon of Sexy Bitch, also from One Love, with Akon.

Top Tracks 2008 (5 – 1)

And here is the cream of 2008… in my very humble opinion.

5. Dance, Dance, DanceLykke Li

The young and beautiful Lykke Li released her debut album Youth Novels early in 2008, which was met with great fanfare through the blogosphere, which had been primed with the early release of Dance, Dance, Dance. In the song Lykke Li claims that her dancing hips lie and she is actually terribly shy. I love how wonderfully unique, catchy and adorable this tune is.

4. Sleepy HeadPassion Pit

I wrote about this track as one of those fabulous crooked trees, those fabulous tracks that are both strange and wonderful. Passion Pit independently released Sleepy Head early in the year, which resulted in multiple labels vying for the artist to sign with them. In the end, Frenchkiss Records won out, and the album Chunk of Change was released in mid September.

3. Walking on a DreamEmpire of the Sun

The Empire of the Sun are a diversely talented pair from Australia. I posted about their haunting track Country earlier this year, but neglected to tell you about their ridiculously catchy, soon to be pop classic Walking on a Dream (I wouldn’t doubt that you heard about it anyways!). It took a couple of listens for this track to sink into my psyche, but it didn’t take long before I was searching through the tracks on my mp3 player so that I could hear this gem again.

2. Electric FeelMGMT

The young pair from Brooklyn dropped an amazing album on the scene with help from The Flaming Lips producer, Dave Fridmann. Oracular Spectacular contains several stand out tracks that made MGMT one of the top bands of 2008. While I adore the majority of the album, Electric Feel is the stand out track that I listen to over and over. Sadly, I didn’t get around to posting about MGMT this year, but I’m excited to post about their future offerings.

1. Day ‘N’ Nite (Crookers Remix) – Kid Cudi

This song isn’t even officially out yet, it’s set to hit the shelves January 13th, 2009. But, I have the satisfaction in knowing that I posted about it 8 months ago. This killer track earns my top spot in this year’s best of list with the fresh, thick sound that The Crookers bring to the up and coming rapper Kid Cudi, aka. The Man on the Moon.

Some New Stuff

After that super long Top 10 post, which took forever to write, I think it’s time for some new stuff.

Everyone NoseN*E*R*D
N.E.R.D.

After a long hiatus (4 years) N*E*R*D, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo from The Neptunes along with Shay Haley, are to release a new album called Seeing Sounds in June, and are currently touring with Kanye West in support of that record. The first single, Everyone Knows, was released on their Billionaire Boys Club blog, devoted mostly to their clothing and shoe lines. A very enterprising group of men to say the least! The track is a bona fide original! It opens with an a capella chant of “All the girls standing in the line for the bathroom”, then breaks into to funky beats and bass with Pharrell’s unique vocals leading the listener through a scene in a club. Containing one of my favourite lines: “A hundred dollar bills! Look atchoo, atchoo!”, this track is super fun, funky and terribly cool.

CampusVampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend (2008)

The blogsphere has been all over this brand new group from New York, and for good reason. The well crafted tunes from these talented artists are both catchy and technically impressive. The effortless compositions with both African and alterna-rock influences catch the ear and make the feet want to more. Their debut, self-titled album has many great tracks, but my favourite is Campus. Though a really fun and upbeat track, it seems to be about a time of post break and continually seeing the ex on campus. The catchy chorus: “How am I supposed to pretend, I never want to see you again” gets my hand waving in the air in time with the beat every time I listen hear this song.

Day ‘N Nite (Crooker’s Remix)Kid Cudi
Day ‘n’ Nite (2008)

Annie Mac dropped this track for the first time last week on her show The Mash Up on BBC Radio 1. It’s fresh beats gets the head bopping at the outset. The track keeps it interesting by switching it up often. A hip hop feel, crazy cut ups, a touch of R&B mashed up with some Drum & Bass… this song has it all! Even a dynamic use of an industrial alarm is included in this mix of the highly acclaimed hip hop offering by the Ohio based artist. Kid Cudi is all about the music. He has yet to release a proper album, but he has developed his own unique sound. Not driven by the bling that his counterparts so frequently rap about, he prefers to concentrate “on making something powerful, something that’s beyond words” (HHNLive Interview), a very respectable attitude for a new-comer(ish) to the hip hop scene. This fresh mix is my introduction to the Crookers, but the duo hailing from Italy bring this track such fabulous dancability that I’ll have to check into more of their work for sure!
